Who was the Augur?
In ancient Rome, the augur was a priest and official interpreter of the will of the gods, tasked with observing and decoding natural omens, most notably the flight patterns, feeding behaviors, and calls of birds. As a member of the prestigious College of Augurs, he would perform rituals known as "taking the auspices" before any significant public undertaking, whether a military campaign, an election, or the founding of a new settlement. The augur did not predict the future; rather, he determined whether the gods favored a proposed course of action, and his verdict carried enough authority to halt proceedings entirely. It was a role that sat at the intersection of religion, politics, and statecraft, and the word "auspicious" traces directly back to this practice.
The parallels to modern consulting are surprisingly direct. Like the augur, a good business consultant is not in the business of prophecy, rather they are in the business of reading the signals that others overlook and translating those signals into actionable guidance. They are brought in at moments of decision: a market expansion, a restructuring, a strategic pivot. Just as Roman generals and senators relied on the augur's counsel before committing to a path, today's executives turn to consultants to confirm, challenge, or reframe the direction they are already considering. The augur, in this sense, is one of the oldest archetypes of trusted advisory.
